350 Koalas killed by bushfires in New South Wales.

Eastern Australia's bushfires are still burning, gripping the sate of New South Wales which has declareed an unprecedented seven days stage of emergency.

Although a huge effort is underway to try to contain the fire. With more than 1000 wary firefighters on the ground, the fires are now threating Sydney and its surrounding suburbs.

The conditions are still extremely dry, the fire behavior is still quite volatile.

And there are still lots of communities in the northeast of the sate are remain at risk today.

Fires that have been driven by strong winds, high temperatures and bone-dry vegetation.

So far 3 people have died and more than 150 homes have been destroyed.

But it's not just lives and livelihoods being devastated but nature too.

About 350 koalas living on the reserve in Port Macquarie have died in the bushfires, the group Koala Conservation Australia estimates.

That compares with a total population of 500 to 600 in the reserve, said the group's president, Sue Ashton.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital has been nursing rescued the koalas, bandaging their wounds and feeding them eucalyptus leaves and formula.
